Greater Alabama Council of the Boy Scouts of America and YMCA are pleased to announce that they will be hosting a series of Rising Stars basketball clinics to be held at the Birmingham Y September 17-19.
The clinics will be for boys in grades 1-2, 3-4, and 5-6.
It is the goal of the Boy Scouts and the YMCA to utilize these clinics to reach out and attract inner city children and introduce them to their yearly programs. The objective is to use Rising Stars to help enroll inner city kids in positive yearly programs throughout HS.
Rising Stars has successfully utilized basketball to enroll children in programs that take them off the streets throughout the country for over 20 years. Rising Stars is also recognized as among the finest instructional basketball programs in the world.
Their unique method of teaching basketball makes learning a fun filled adventure and involves every participant from beginning to end.
Rising Stars is coming to Alabama as a result of the efforts of Scout board member Trey Ferguson, a former Hoover HS standout and Rising Stars Whiz Kid. Trey has seen first hand the effectiveness of the Rising Stars model in reaching kids.
Mr. Ferguson states, “Being a part of Rising Stars allowed me to have the opportunity of seeing different parts of the US and traveling to other countries. I got a chance to use basketball in ways I could never imagine and had the best time of my life doing it. It was a great experience for me and one I would like every kid here in Alabama to have.” “There is no doubt in my mind that Rising Stars can make a difference in a childs life. I want to see us all being able to make a difference, for every child here in Alabama.”
Another former Rising Star that worked with Trey growing up within the program is ESPN analyst Jay Williams.
Jay was a two time consensus all American, and considered by many to be among the finest guards to ever play the game.
Jay is now also currently the CEO of Rising Stars, and he firmly believes in the value of the Rising Stars clinic model and yearly programs in helping reach kids with a message.
That message can be anything from the value of an education to the importance of a program like the scouts in a child life.
Like any message, to get it across you need the message to be heard.
Getting the right message across is Rising Stars greatest strength.
After having the time of their lives learning how to be better basketball player a child is ready and willing to listen to what it takes to be a better person.
Jay Williams will be a special guest of the Scouts at all three clinics.
